New Orleans: Cruising Back In Time

The best escape from the rowdy bars is a walk along the Mississippi. The calm waters splash up against the rocky barricades as couples stroll hand in hand watching the steamboats chug by.

Novelists like Mark Twain, Herman Melville and William Faulker have been inspired by all the river's seen: war, international trade and extravagant parties. It stands as a steady constant as the city continues to revolve around it.

You can go back two centuries to the height of the showboat era by taking a Jazz cruise. I chose a ride on Steamboat Natchez. It's modeled after the original liner which was built in 1823 and sailed between Natchez, Mississippi and New Orleans. There's a full bar, buffet and live band playing standards as you sail the afternoon away.
