Berkshire County: Harvesting Health

The convenience of shopping local breeds a sense of community and intimacy in the Berkshires. It's easier to stop by your neighborhood farm than to make a trip to the nearest super mart.

Just follow any of the handwritten signs advertising what's in season. They'll direct you up a dirt trail and right to the front doorstep of a barn. There you can buy ricotta that's been made a few hours prior, eggs that have just been laid, milk still warm from the cow and pies with fruit picked in the garden.

One of the most popular barn grocers is Gould Farm. You'd never know that this idyllic 630-acre forest is a model home for adults coping with mental illness.

The bakery and cafe are all a part of the rehabilitation process. As patients progress in their care, they're able to help more and more on the farm. They help the Berkshire community flourish and in return are given a sense of purpose which often expedites their recovery.

It's inspiring to support this innovative and compassionate approach to well-being. As you help others to return to a healthy life, you yourself are encouraged to have one as you stock your kitchen with fresh ingredients.
