LA County: Ramen, Not Instant
When most Americans think of ramen, they think of their endearing first years out of the house. The days when they were too broke, too busy or just too lazy to make a real meal.
Instant noodles are convenient and delicious. It's for this reason that they've become a worldwide phenomenon. Despite their popularity, there are still shops that take pride in the art of making this Japanese dish from scratch. Little Tokyo in Downtown LA is full of them.
My favorite spot is Orochon Ramen. It's hidden in a popular little shopping complex on the hard to find Astronaut E S Onizuka Street named after the first Asian American to reach space.
You can get a bowl of fresh noodles, green onions, egg, assorted vegetables and pork large enough to last you a couple days for a mere $7.00. For a couple more bucks you can get a plethora of additional toppings including: extra meat, vegetables, tofu, garlic and bean sprouts.
There's always a wait and they don't take reservations. Trust me, it's worth it...unless of course you're afraid you'll never be able to eat Cup of Noodles again.
