In Eastern tradition, relaxation and rejuvenation are an
important part of maintaining your well-being. Going to the spa is an essential
part of this practice like meditation, exercise or eating a good meal. While
it’s not a common activity amongst Americans, no one needs it more.
Koreatown in Los Angeles is full of bath houses that are
open 24 hours and cost around $15.00 for the day. Some are gender-specific and
others are unisex. My regular spot, Olympic, is for women only. It’s become my
sanctuary; where I go to clear my mind of white noise.
They have valet so you don’t have to stress about finding a
parking spot in the somewhat hectic neighborhood. After your car is taken away, you enter into the zone of tranquility. You’re given a robe, a towel and a locker
for your belongings. You’re then free to spend as much time as you please in
the facilities. There’s a lukewarm bath infused with tea that is supposed to be
good for the skin, a boiling pool with jets and a cold bath to prevent
overheating. The tradition is to circulate through all three temperatures in
order to produce a natural high. It doesn’t take long to feel light-headed and
soon after stress miraculously melts away. Next, you can step into the sauna,
steam room, oxygen room or newly built Himalayan salt room where women place
the warm pale pink rocks on muscles that are tense or chakras to try to
channel metaphysical energy fields.
Women often spend the entire day immersed in this escape.
There’s also a lounge where people read, nap and do yoga. You don’t even have
to step out of your robe and slippers if you get hungry.
There’s a cafeteria
connected to the spa that serves up traditional Korean meals with rice, kimchi
and vegetables for $10.00.
