If you cruise from the hippie town of Ocean Beach all the way to the gay-friendly, hipster neighborhood of Hillcrest, you’ll encounter stereotypically laid back Southern Californians. They’re all proud to claim San Diego as their hometown. Besides the ocean and the weather, they’re quick to chalk it up to the friendly people.

Considering how much San Diegans love their city, it’s not surprising establishments supporting locally sourced products have blossomed in the region. Their commitment to brewing craft beer is no exception and in the last decade the city has caught the attention of ale aficionados.

There are now over 50 breweries in the county, buses offering brewery tours, a smart phone app called Taphunter that tells users what’s on tap where and maps available for tourists looking to self-guide. San Diego took notice of the draw for the draft five years ago and started hosting an annual beer week. This fall, the city plans to see thousands pour in for the ten-day festival.
While it can be fun to organize a formal tasting tour, it’s not necessary to do research ahead of time to find a good pint in San Diego. All the most popular neighborhoods have dives with at least three or four local brews. Whether you’re a little snooty about your stout or just looking to quench your thirst, you’re in for a treat.
